Webb22 okt. 2024 · Slow slip events that occur below the seafloor are more challenging to see. How can we make it visible? Our task has been the installation of a GNSS station on the seafloor. GNSS communicates through a radio wave. Radio waves are scattered underwater and do not reach the deep sea. So, we used a sound wave. WebbNumerical simulations of slow slip suggest that repeated SSEs in the transition zone between stick– slip and creep concentrate stress at the down-dip limit of the seismogenic zone, which in turn increases the probability that a future SSE will evolve into a dynamic rupture (SEGALLand BRADLEY2012).

This apparent slow slip event occurred over a 50-by-300-kilometer area and took approximately 35 days. Researchers estimated that the energy released in such an event would be equivalent to a magnitude 6–7 earthquake, yet no significant seismic signal was detected. Visa mer A slow earthquake is a discontinuous, earthquake-like event that releases energy over a period of hours to months, rather than the seconds to minutes characteristic of a typical earthquake.
