The starter is a mini starter and the instructions state the bendix should only mesh 1/2 onto the ring gear, which it does. I'm using the correct knurled starter bolts. Turned out there were two shims for the housing. So I was able to painstakingly remove the nose housing and add the other shim. This was not easy with the starter hanging there above the y pipe.
