I haven’t encountered the same hiccup with the newer A400 Plus, and have been shooting an A400 20-gauge for a few years and it has never hung up. It had a problem with ejecting 2 ¾ inch waterfowl loads from the git-go. Absolutely love that gun and have had zero issues. Hunted with a friend who just bought the browning A5 WW. Awesome looking gun. I wish I had more feedback on it to sway you one way or the other. If you are not set on having a 3.5" gun, I would also offer up the Fabarm XLR Waterfowl shotgun as an option. I have one in 28" length and prefer this gun over my A400 Extreme. Love the raised rib. Lighter than the A400 but handles recoil very well. Comes in 3" length.

The A-5 had nicer wood, better machining, nicer finish, etc. The A-400 has less recoil, handles better, and my clay bird scores are higher. The A-400 handles 12 ga. 7/8 oz. reloads well, the A-5 did not. And the A-400 has choke tubes.
